It's that lovely time again.
A birthday for a certain Mister Lovee...
There is such a special air about making a homemade birthday cake, isn't there?
I adore the feeling of having a free afternoon to bake something with love.
Sifting sugar.
Listening to the machine whip butter.
The radio playing a tune in the background.
Pups wandering in to see what I am doing.
Checking on batter and frosting...
Watching smooth perfection happen...
As the music plays, and the oven warms, I see Miles out of the corner of my eye.
He's playing.
He LOVES toys.
He always has a toy with him.
He has inside toys and outside toys.
In the garden is a pile of his outside toys - some bones, some rope chews, some balls.
All placed in one place by him.
I almost shed a tear I am so touched when I see his little playground where he keeps all his treasures.
Inside he has some fluffy toys.
Which he rips apart.
And is then gifted new ones.
Matty plays tug of war with him sometimes.
But mostly, Matty thinks Miles is still a silly puppy, I think.
My big beautiful puppy.
I love those boys so.
(Miles has a super deep bark, like Barry White would if he was a dog. He makes big deep lion growl sounds when he spots somethig to chase, or a car. And he also has a banshee howl that is all out of tune and high pitched, isn't that funny?)
Miles looks up at me when I say it's time to color our frosting.
For a second I think he understands me perfectly.
(Matty opens the door and leaves to bark at something outside)
I think about what color to make the cake.
I choose a sort of seafoam green.
One of both mine and mister's fave colors.
A little blue, a little yellow...
Then it is time for frosting the cake.
I made a lemon cake, with lemon zest grated in.
Two layer.
The center filled with raspberry cream.
I used raspberry preserves to make the filling, so there are tiny seeds to accompany the lemon zest.
Fresh, summery.
Frosted.
I am not a pro froster, obviously.
:)
But I try...
The cake is done.
Nap time for some.
Into the refrigerator, while we get ready to surprise the birthday boy-man.
A homemade cake from the heart.
(I am calling this cake, the green monster, tee hee)
Yes sirree.
I hope it's tasty.
Happy Birthday Lovee!!!
Now to come up with some more plans for the event.
By the way, I love your thank you ideas for the cottage.
Brilliant!
I am going to take them all and meld something up.
In the moment, I am trying to invent some birthday fun too.
I wish I could hire a clown and call it a day.
Why doesn't anyone like clowns these days I wonder?
Do you know?
Okay, time to blow up balloons!!
No one is ever too old for a proper birthday party.
No way Jose.
Or even a very merry un-birthday party.
I think you need one of those soon, don't you?
Today is a lovely day!
Love, V
