A Fanciful Twist

A caged event. A splendid event. A curious party perhaps?

So, it was one of those regular days in the funny little place at the edge of the desert.  Where the cacti meet the trees, and heat looms but winter surely takes a decent peek.  Not quite the Sahara, but not quite Washington State either...

A day, where the clock strikes three, reminding it is time for a magical kind of tea...  The creatures were getting cozy, gathering around...  Two had arrived early, when an odd thing occurred...(click on photos to enlarge)

      

You see, one could not clearly recall every detail...  However, the distinct memory was that of a sound... A sound accompanied by song, and then a smell of sweetness all too tender...

It was the tiny song of the rare Cupcake Duncecap Goldy Winged Bird...

      

Yes, it was quite certain...  He was sitting on a tree.  He appeared every few hundred years...  Luring creatures to a place so sweet, so divine, one taste, and you would never be the same...  We followed him...

      

He chirped, telling it was something special for you and you and you and, all of you!  A caged event.  A splendid event.  A curious party perhaps?

Could it truly be a fact?  Not an urban legend?  That when you see the Cupcake Duncecap Goldy Winged Bird, a sweet caged curious tea party awaits? One that with one taste of the caged splendor, brings waves of neverending creativity and imagination? 

I am here to prove it to be a true tale...  For what awaited us, as we peeked inside....

      

Were the very treats themselves...

      

The door slowly opened...

      

Which one would you choose?  Which one would you eat???  They all called out...  Beckoning... 

       

We soon found, those were not peppermints, but strawberry creamsicle swirls of delight...

I can here you exclaim?  Did you choose the one???  With sprinkles and shiny red flair?

      

Or was it the one with enticing swirls?

      

Wasn't it impossible to choose? 

      

No you say?  You say you knew right away???

      

I should have known better.  You closed right in...  The one that tickled your fancy...  And how did it taste??

Mr. Lovee had several, his eyes closed in bliss.  He slowly chewed, he muffled, mmmm, mmmm, mmmm...  So moist, so perfect.  The best ever...  Hooray!!!

A morsel to take all those sorrows away...  (if you have any at all, which we hope you don't)

      

We shall set one aside for our trusty gnome...  Who guards us and cares for us, whenever we are alone...

      

So, here I am, just a delivery girl...  Bringing you an endless sweet curious cupcake feast, while I am away.  Oh, don't worry, it is just for a few days.  I must see the Lioness Queen Mombie and her hilarious storytelling funny mother (my granny).  For that very special Sunday, that is right around the corner...

So make yourselves at home and eat up all those wonderful treats...

      

Oh and, since you offered ;)  I am leaving you in charge of the place while I am gone...  You have to be careful with all the little characters...  They like to get out and cause mischief... 

Beware of the sweet sheepish faces...

      

You remember what happened with the rabbit and the porcupine and the costume chest while I was away last time?  Oh, and I presume you are going to tell me that my three wheel bike got dented on its own??  Hee heee......

      

Okay, here are the rules...

        

Have a marvelous weekend!!!!  Eat your treats and hang from the chandeliers!  Make sure not to brush your hair, or to wear matching socks to the grocery store!!  Oh, and please, make sure you play in bubbles and make a mess!!

Hooray! The Swashbuckler Soiree!!

We were not told what time the pirates might turn up for the Swashbuckler Soiree.  We didn't know how many there would be, if one, or perhaps a few?  Until we heard the sound of waves crashing through the air... Was it truly them?? In their ship filled with loot?  Or was it all a dream?  Thank goodness we were slightly prepared during the pre-party post below...

      

No no, it seemed very real!  Not a dream at all...  It was the pirate ship, filled with wonderous treasures...

      

Rare rubies dangled above an even rarer ruby eyed skull....  While pure diamond neck jewels, from a beheaded queen, rested upon a sail...

      

It was magic!!  Seeing the ship soar through the waves in the sky, amongst the tree branches.  With the brilliant sun illuminating it...

      

I wondered if I might be able to get my hands on some of that wonderful loot...

      

They were a rowdy bunch, dancing all about, while passing their beverage around...

      

I was glad I had time to entertain them all...  Oh by the way, was that you I saw dancing on the plank???  Canoodling with the head pirate guy???  Oh Beware!!  Do not let Donna find you out!!

I have all the meals prepared for you and the pirates!!  I have brought in fish all the way from Sweden...

Oh ya!  Swedish Fish my friends!!!  Yumm Yumm!!

      

I also have for you, the ever tender, delicious, Golden Medalions.  Oh, no no no, don't worry, they are not Golden Medalions in the form of Ostrich, like you might think...  Oh No, I know you all are Candarians.  You know, kind of like vegetarians, only candy based :)

I guess you can say, these are more like Golden Nuggets...  (other wise known as, Rolos ;)

      

Now isn't that a delicious beginning?  Oh, and let's not forget the Octopus...  A rare red twisty variety...

      

And what is for dessert you ask??  Well, I say?  Have you no faith in me??  Of course, I made sure to have Strawberry and Cream swirled together, just for the occassion...

Did I hear you say, we were lacking something???  Why yes we are!!  What about some music!!!

      

Yo Ho, Yo Ho!  A pirates life for me!  Who wants to show their skills first???  Oh, he does.. Okay, take it away Johnny Canales...

      

      

Oh, I almost forgot...  I have two games!!  First, the "What made you become a pirate?" game...

      

Promptly followed by the, who can stack more treats, game...

      

This is all just wayyy too much fun...  But, all those sweets, are making me feel....

      

Why can't I be more like her???  She stuffs her mouth with treats all day, and never gets a headache...

      

What about you?  Did you get a belly ache from all of that??  Do you need some Dramamine for the ship ride to the next stop?

Delightfully Playing & Preparing for Donna's Party {otherwise known as, the perfect reason to pre-party at my place}

The blog soiree of the season is being held at the Swashbuckler Castle in just a few days...  So, I decided to start a little early.  Have a colorful little outdoor party for myself, to celebrate the upcoming event... (may I add that, everyday in itself, is reason enough to throw yourself a party)

      

I am so in love with color!  Do you think I could convice a Swashbuckler to prance around in fun stripes or delicious polka dots?  Hmm, it might take some moonshine to get away with that one...

      

I must say, discovering a can of Design Master, Olive Bright #790, on my shelves, was more excitement than my little heart could contain!  It was enough to get me to Olive Brighten up a brass candelabra!!!

      

May I humbly add, that I made all of the ceramic treasures on this table...  Most of you know, I have been a potter at the Tucson Museum of Art for many years...  But, believe it or not, this is the very first time I have set the table, solely using my creations...   

      

      

I best make sure to set a place for Miss Mouserson...  She would be terribly offended if I didn't...

      

Don't forget to set your table (as well as yourself) with lots and lots of ribbons.  Ribbons (or little strips of precious fabrics) make everything extra special...

      

      

Be sure not to miss all the lovely edible and rare treasures that might make their way here by way of a magic pirate ship (on Saturday)...

      

Can you imagine, that a green candelabra could spark such joy, and cause all this raucous...

      

I have been soaking up the lovely weather, and just indulging in thousands of flower petals...  I have been throwing them up in the sky...

      

And letting them rest upon my walkway...  Amazing really, how such a simple pleasure, can feel so decadent...

      

I had better be on my way...  Here I am dreaming and playing, when I have tons to do...  And paint!!

      

Especially with an almost perfectly healed leg!!!  We have to paint the town hot pink, chartreuse, yellow & teal!  Don't you think???

      

Oh and I almost forgot...  I have a new colorful Creature Collections, print in the shop.  I so thank Miss Holly Becker of Decor8, for featuring it!! (You can see it on her blog, if you scroll down to one of several 4/30/2008 posts)  That was a lovely surprise for me this week!! 

      

There will be siblings joining this piece soon.  I can't tell you how much I love white with brilliant splashes of color, and vintage love!

      

I am excited to share what comes next in this series.  I am still working on more paper dress girls... And, like I said, the new dolls are 2 seconds away from complete...

My Little World...

After a long run of cuckooooo frenzy, we all need a little time to hide in our favorite place.  My room at the country house, from the day it was built, has been a magic haven for me.  It makes me utterly happy, and it makes me feel like I am in a safe little cocoon where nothing can get me... (you know like goblins and such...)

The last two days I have really enjoyed the weather and my space.  It was overcast and breezy and just perfect for a party with some of my friend's children & my favorite tea cup (for 6 years now, I hope I never break it)...

      

I was also, on this funny wave of the little things that are so blissful.  The little things that bring love into my life.  So, I thought I might share a few...  And maybe you can share a few here, or on your blog too?  And let me know?  The little things in your private space, that bring you bliss?

      

The first thing is getting to have time for a tea party.  I know, we probably over do the idea here, but c'mon, can you really over do a tea party?  Some people have high tea every day...

      

Well, either way, I had to have a little welcome tea party for my friend's creatures, whom are now mine.  You see, when you receive a package from Marmee (her bear is to the left, drawing/painting in pink/red is behind the bear)  you must be prepared for smiles bouncing off of walls.  My dear friend Marjorie, who I call Marmee and Marrrrmmmseee, most of the time (which must make a proper Victorian loveliness, like herself,  crrrazy) sent me the most delightful treats.  I could never thank her enough.  So, what better way, than to have a party?

Of course, the sweet and shy bunny had to be invited.  You see, he was in my friend Shell's show, and I swooooned over him soooo much, that, well, one day, a package from the other side of the earth shows up at my doorstep, and lo and behold...  Bunny.  He is on the right and he has ears that cover his eyes, so when he feels shy, or gets bored and wants to sleep, voila, the perfect ears do the trick.  I loooove him.  He is such a joy!! Fannk yoooo Miss Shell!!!

      

And of course, we can not have a party without Pigeon.  Pigeon is a wee Owl who has lived with us for over a year.  I purchased Owl right out of my friend Sarah's delightful shop.  Sarah is a riot, and so real and practical!!  I adore her.  She is such an amazing sewer and maker!!! (and she puts up with my wacky chats :)

So, what do we do after a tea party?  First we must relax a little, and let the sugar subside a bit.  And while doing so, I got into that whole idea of things that I love in my wee world...  Some things you have seen before...  But, I just had to share little things that fill my heart...

Although I have a love-hate relationship with Anais Nin, I looooove this painting of her.  Well, let me say, when I purchased it, it did not say it was of her...  But, to me, it is her.  Anais, on my wall... Perhaps it was her decked out in a "go as your own madness" masquerade...

      

Either way, I feel so cozy with her looking over me... in a little nook by my bedside..

      

As most of you know, that is a Magic Jelly  piece in the frame.  Also, hanging on my lamp is a Mary Contrary piece.  Looove her work, she is so sweet! And on the wall, to the left, you can catch a wee glimpse of a piece from my beloved John Derian collection.  Wait, soory, I don't know how this turned into the things "I have."  But, I guess, I just want to give credit to the artists who's work makes me happy...

So, one of the other things I adore and love the most, is when the sun starts to go down, and casts a blue glow over everything...

      

I just adooore that time of the day.  And, I love when I happen to be in my room in the country at that time...  And, I actually sit back and enjoy it... I love opening the curtains, and letting the blue pour in...

      

That is what happened yesterday.  I got to have a little cozy time, and sit and draw and enjoy the blue light, and curl up, and be at peace...

      

And while I am all cozy, I just loooove looking in my mirror, which is right across from my bed, and getting little glimpses of my dollhouse... And, hoping to see some activity in there....  Just hoping...

      

And after a lovely nights sleep, I always wake up to the most comforting feeling ever since...   

      

You see, late last year, I put my old mantle over my bed as a headboard...  And, I have to say...  You know when you love something, for me it is architectural salvage and such.  I love to see the old paint peeling off of things, and revealing another color below.  But, when you love something like that, and you own a piece you adore, we usually don't get to enjoy the details as much as we would like, right?  Well, putting my mantle over my head, and waking up to it hovering above me every morning brings major bliss to me.  I just love the peeling cracking, paint peeking through.  I get to enjoy it to the fullest...

        

It takes me to another place.  Almost like I get to wake up in another time...  In my room in the country, where you open the door and you find dirt, and bunnies, and quail, and old paths...  and the edges of your skirts get tarnished, and your mantle headboard, holds old stories...  That is life here to me, surrounded by things that make me happy...

      

But besides that I have silly loves...  Like I love that my Valentine's day balloon is still hanging on for dear life, dancing around my room...

      

And I just love dangling piles of trinkets and such... 

      

And I love staring at the girl blowing bubbles from a bird bath (John Derian)...

         

But most of all...  I love being able to have days to enjoy these quirky little things...  Which are so necessary for refueling the soul...

ps: Oh oh, I almost forgot, I had to tell someone this...  So, I loooove my new surprise pink rug too...   I got it by washing it with a red towel and fuschia cotton pants...  Heeeee... The little accidental joys.... (yes, I know that red things bleed, but I didn't think this old red towel and old pants would create this wonderful color, I love it!!)

      

pps:  I have not forgotten the Tiny Tea Party winner, I promise.  I have chosen a potential winner, and am working a little bit on the actual pencil drawing before I know... Trust me, it was soooo hard to choose, and still, I sit with the descriptions and go back and forth....  Thank you for being patient!!  xxoo, see you soon!!

Tiny Tea Party...

I am having a tiny tea party for you.  Why you ask? Why?  Well, the reason is that I can't much type, only nibble and sip.  This is a tiny tea party to celebrate me not losing one of my tiny fingers.  Okay, okay, I am being a bit melodramtic.  But, I did have a major right pointer finger mishap Friday night (thank goodness for my finger saviour, Doctor Lovee Lovee).  Which is leaving me not willing to type too much.  As, the poor purple dear has been worked a tad bit to hard today as it is.

      

But what I would like you to do, is to describe to me, what wonderful attire you will be wearing to my Tiny Tea Party.  Now, here is the catch.  The one of you, that describes to me the most outrageous wonderfully glorious wardrobe, will receive their make believe Tiny Tea Party self in an illustration.  Yep, I will recreate my vision of your description, and gift you yourself, illustrated, colored and printed on Canvas!! Plus a cameo appearance in your attire, right here at Tiny Tea Party central.

So, get dressed and grab a seat.  I want to know, who you are, what kind of accent do you have? Do you have a hat on? Feathers?  Gowns?  Teal Stockings?  Teal stockings, Oh wait, that's me... Or are you a pirate? Of course, boys are invited too!!  Do tell!

I am just going to sit over here, and sip my spiked tea (revisiting a photo), and nurse my finger that got caught in a ladder, as I opened it, backwards, with my back facing it, and got completely caught, to panic point.  Screaming.  Crying, Shrieking.  Then resorted to having to yank out said little fractured piggy.  Mangled little guy :) All while I was trying to use the ladder to sit on and play a tune...  I guess I really am not ready to join the carnival.  My skills are just pitiful...

      

Back to the Tiny Tea Party...  Make sure you choose some tasty treats!!

When the girl is away the Elfin will play...

I got back from my voyage, crept in ever so quietly, trying not to make any noise with the keys to the secret keyhole...

      

I knew something was up.  I saw a trail of glitter, not wider than a quarter of an inch. It started at the doorstep, and continued through my room.  Of course, just as I suspected, it led me straight to the curious playroom...

It seems we have some new members in our family, in the form of elves.  Although, I don't think they had a hard time convincing the others, they may have been responsible for a Christmas bash.  I peek in and what is the first sign of havoc?  Little Jeremy on a mushroom, partying. Yes, I know, out of control.  Then two new faces...  The elves... Oh, don't let their innocent faces fool you...

      

I get closer and notice the whole gang.  Oh, they have toys and treats.  They even put up a Christmas tree.  I guess Auntie Louie sent them a Mark Ryden Christmas card, that got them so excited, they threw a party.. OH Auntie, did they clear it with you? 

You can imagine what fun they had without me harping about using too many sparkles or being to loud... Where on earth did they find that tree???

      

You know, it is not that I don't want them to have any fun...  It is just that something can always go wrong.  And the fact of the matter is that, well, noone else can hear them but me, so how ever will they call for any help?  Wouldn't ya know it, all of a sudden Faun Boy starts to get all fuzzy...

      

And, down he goes.  As I always tell them, someone always ends up getting hurt in the end...  Looks like there was a bit too much shroom nog served.  Thank goodness I turned up just as they were all huddled around Faun Boy, not knowing what to do...

      

A glass of water and he was just fine, don't worry about him too much... I think I'll let them party til they all drop...

It is sooo good to be home.  But, I am sooooo behind, I feel like my head is going to explode.  I have so much to do.  My goodness... Whirlwind world...

Treats for my shop update are almost ready.  I know, I am later than I wanted to be...  Oh, but these new pieces are dear to my heart. 

As for my voyage...  Thank you for all your wonderful wishes for my friend Carolyn.  It was a long drive back home after her 5 hour surgery.  She was so sick from the anesthesia.  The drive from the other side of town was crazy long.  We got every red light.  She had to start her face down ritual right after we left the hospital.  So, she ended up huddled on the floor of my car, behind the passenger seat. Sick and miserable. It was a rough night.  The next day we awoke beyond early to head back out to the other side of town for the morning after visit.  She can not see with the eye, but vision should return in 8 weeks.  She looks like she was in a boxing match and lost.  But, she is such an amazing sport, black eye and all.  There are so many visitors and so much love.  I have so much more to share on that front that is just astounding.  It has to do with how some of you touched her so profoundly!  Much more sharing to come...

Eye of Newt and hairy wart, Lizard Tails & Wildebeast snort...

Throw it in a cauldron and watch it bubble.  A perfect potluck treat for the party!  Missing the Bloglandia Halloween bash is simply not an option!  I am ready to do a little Skeleton Rhumba and of course the Devlish Cha-cha-cha...  The lights in the Witches mansion are all nicely lit... The Witch waits inside, anxious for the strike of midnight...

      

A spooktacular Wicked banner from the wonderful Sadira (she made it) hangs proudly above my Halloween mansion.  I made silhouettes for the windows and filled it with lights.  Mr. Lovee and I will carve pumpkins tomorrow.  He left me the most charming surprise pumpkin.  Hiding in a super secret special place for me to find, it made me stop and smile and swoon.  In the meantime (until we carve tomorrow), I have a cheesy plastic one plugged in, but I like it all the same...

      

Okay, back to the Witch...  She has her lovely shoes and stockings ready to go, her broom all polished, ready to take flight...(You remember my Halloween love that started in September, with the Pirate ship & the stockings!)

      

The Halloween mirror is almost fully alive, to jump on a broom and fly right inside... Where a Halloween bash ensues, filled with glitter and carmel apples...  Carousel rides on masked horses and cotton candy swirling in the air like snow...  Would you like to jump into the mirror with me? 

      

The other Witches are waiting, the book is on hand, to practice turning mushrooms into men from romance novels, you know, average Witch stuff like that...

      

The spooky music is playing from the ever thoughtful Amanda Button, just perfection!!!!

      

With songs like Eyeball in my Martini and Wormy Figs!! Alfred Hitchcock and more!! I have on my hat, I am the Witch on the left, with the crazy yellow locks, Waiting for tales, got any??  This photo is from last years Witches party and I must say, I am wearing my grandmother's velvet cape because it was cold.  Now today it was almost 90' here.  Pretty scary weather stuff, I'd say...

      

I have a stash of treats to share with you for the party...  The real life treats I sent out for the giveaway are still making their way to places quite far...  Miss Mary and Miss Cherie, both enjoyed theirs! Yipeee!Oh and so did Dave and his lovely wife!  There is one treat floating in oblivion.. I think it might be sitting in customs due to real and fake edibles...

      

Off on my broomstick for now!!! I hope you can some how squeeze through the screen and grab a few treats! Back in a few days... After the madness!!  YYYEeeeeehhheeeeheheheheeeeeeeeeee cackle!

A quick note to say...

The party is over and it was just lovely.  The only pictures I have are from the beginning, the end, and the morning.  Why is it that we forget the camera in the middle?  I'll share a bunch of pictures, and then I am off.  As it is my Dad's birthday today and of course Father's day...

I love putting together romantic little soirees in my own way.  Also, I nipped the issue of the tablecloths flying away by tying rocks in little bundles of fabric, and then clipping them with clothespins, to the table cloth. 

      

My sister made the flags. I can't believe she did that! She is such a perfectionist, so each triangle was just perfect. Made with stunning fabric also!  Thank you Kristen!!! She couldn't attend, as she is already out of town visiting Dad, and I am off as soon as I finish this post ;)

The fruit was unreal.  It was like no fruit anyone had ever tasted.  It was like fruit should taste, only "unreal."  It seemed like Wonka himself had tweaked it.  It was just so perfectly ripe and amazing....

      

My friend Carolyn is just incredible. If any of you heard the NPR, 1 hour special about cancer (on Thursday June 14th, at 6pm).  It was about her son, Jason.  He has survived the unbelievable. He has a wife that is, I'd say, a real life "angel."  Carolyn is a dear dear friend.  She made those hors douvres.  She actually made the breads too!  In the shape of flowers!!! And she made the chocolate carmel cupcakes. Thank you Carolyn!!!!

      

That is my friend Kent.  He has a real job, but I like to refer to him at the jazz guitarist extraordinaire.  He loved that bowl of lettuce.  I think it is his favorite color.   He is single ;) and he's a doll... Just saying, you know... if.... hehehee....

My friend Dean, the most amazing classical guitarist was there too.  He made the women swoon with his Robin Hoood songs... He sounds like he has 10 players playing with him.. And it is only him.  Sorry, no pic of Dean.  :(

As for other wonderful guitar players.   Dick and Jim (Benny's Band mates) were there.  So were Adam and Rick.  Not that you know any of these people.  But, that was quite the ensemble of players in the yard.

Another night of slumber partying!! In order to keep you all entertained, our hostess Stiletto Heights, as well as,  Jungle Dream Pagoda, Kandeedo Bandeedo and myself have been rehearsing at the whip of the Jungle actress herself.  We are getting ready to put on a show...You know, slumber party skits. Kandeedo and I are so bad!!! We escaped the slumber party this morning and went out for some delicious breakfast!! We stumbled into the Tucson streets and jumped into our getaway cab...

      

      

What should we order??? All those cocktails and junk food made us want something slightly healthy before the greasy breafast...Some fruit and fruit juice to start, I think Kandeedo needed some smelling salts to wake her up after all of the partying...

And now!!! We are so ready to party! Another night! Yippee!  Since Monday is a holiday can we do this on Sunday too? What do you think?  I think we should start with some fascination powder!! And then maybe Toe nails??? And after that some candy???

      

      

      

I even have a special Tiger Stiletto to share with the hostess. I hope she likes it! It is a wild one!!!

Evening of  Friday February 16, 2007:

Hi Girls!!!!! I am away from my loftish space where my computer is. I am on Kandeedo's and it is an Apple and it is hard for me to work with cuz I don't know what I am doing, but she has been so patient with me! Just be prepared for lopsided pictures. But, I am here. I wouldn't miss this!!! It is my first slumber party at the lovely and fabulous Stiletto Heights' Pad. I am so overdosed on creamy yet crunchy tasty delights from the Jungle Dream Pagoda that I am running late and I am convinced it is February 16, 1986! I stepped through a 1986 door and I can't get back! The door knob came out in my hand!!!

This is so much fun!!! I am sharing a few things at the slumber party. Mud masks, exfoliating stuff, hot-rollers (which I haven't used since 1986), A big glass bottle of alcohol, a frog prince, a drawer of jewels and the watch that made me late - Esprit, it stopped working in 1987. Oh and cushy pillows and blankets and hairspray!!! Annnnd, I am wearing my terri cloth robe and cozy socks.

I almost forgot, I am bringing my 80's jacket and some make-up and some drinky stuff and some hats, candy, and wait, let me look for some popcorn in the cabinet!!!! You must come, you are invited too!!! What are you bringing??? See you there!!! And, as soon as I get back to my own computer I promise to stop by and visit you!! XXO, Vanessa

Ready for a Tea Party

Tea parties make my heart sing.  So, in honor of Risa's Friday Tea Party , I am getting out the "good stuff." I am now feeling extra excited for my and Cinderella's very own real life Valentine's Day Tea Party ( Queen of hearts, Mad Hatter tea party to be exact). 

The candy tree is getting ready, for Risa's lovely Tea Party.  Get out the Tea cups and sparkly jewels...A Tea party is the perfect time to drench yourself  in your fancies that you rarely get to wear.

                     

I think I am going to bring two of my favorite little friends that live in my Branch Tree.  They are from FG & Co., and so lovely indeed.

                      

                      

I even collaged myself into a little FG&Co. card to share a big cake plate of cherries.  I am also wearing my sparkly headband (I think it's a stray from the eighties) and added a victorian flower.  Oh yes, and I am bringing my own Tea cup...See it there??

                      

I must make sure all the tea cups are clean...And then, try to choose some jewels...Maybe my huge "diamond" ring...The one that lives in the glass case....
